UnderMine

Welcome and overview

Snappy and fun: This is a small, hardcore dungeon crawl that you’ll really want to replay a lot. It’s the quick play sessions, strange items, and small sense of progression that make it so. You’re going to die a lot. You’re just going to do it happily.

What you’re getting into

UnderMine is part action, part adventure, and completely roguelike high chaos compressed into short journeys that often won’t play out the same way twice. In the game, I felt the building passion of a small studio taking on the world, as the rooms, relics, and mysteries all fit together to keep me surprised. It combines a character-strengthening story of procedurally generated dungeons with the fascination of a light-role-playing experience, culminating in boss fights that keep revealing their significance during the next trip.

How gameplay unfolds

Anointment’s processes are huge, boiling down to a few core steps, which repeat endlessly: you spawn into a mine, collect whatever’s available, and hope you don’t overreach. Combat begins right away. Movement is essential, and timing. And since the rooms are procedurally generated, you don’t so much memorize maps as learn to know them. Shops, relics, consumables, friendly NPCs – they all turn up as you push ever inward, and the excitement keeps building on nearly every floor.

Standout features

  • Procedurally generated; game levels randomly generated so it feels fresh every run.
  • Doepolycute: Items, armor, and other equipment that influences the way you play in ways you wouldn’t anticipate.
  • Continuous advancement so very small improvements combine over runs.
  • Different areas have different dangers and monsters; as the game goes on the world is getting bigger.
  • Updates were very often and there were new areas and new bosses.

(Refer to the notes on the major zone additions and the latest update by the developer pages.)

Main advantages

Won’t take up your entire weekend unless you let it. The short session lengths make it perfect if you want a depth-driven experience but don’t have much time to spare. The item synergies are clever and stack up, making each run an interesting little experiment. You’ll stumble on combos, stumble badly, then ultimately learn. It’s accessible for beginners, but deep enough that even the most min/max players will find their box of tricks (and you can go the whole hog on the skill trees if you like). The art and music are brief, but add a surprising amount of character to the otherwise brutal scrapes.

What are some common uses of it for players?

  • Short relaxing sessions in the evening, time Commitment.
  • Learning creates synergies by try different relic and item combinations from run to run.
  • Successfully defeating the boss in order to unlock new zones the devs add.
  • Doing a short co-op with a friend when you both have time.
  • No rush to gather secrets and unlock small tasks.

Parting thoughts

None of this is elegant. Instead it has a rough grace to it. It’s not a bloated showy game. It’s a compact game. Focused on the essentials of fighting, finding, and knowing just one or two cool new things at a time. It can be mean. It can be hilarious. And it’s strange in all the right ways.

If you enjoy experimentation and want to be left alone during every fight, then this game will cater to you. Run once, discover a technique, die horribly, run again. That’s the process, and it’s a good one.
